Participants will be expected to reflect on their use of self and how it fits into their work with clients, co-workers, and organizations at their Field Placement. The purpose is to begin to think about the values that students bring into social work practice and to assess the unique strengths they have that may be able to be integrated into their work for more effective interventions.
Identification of at least two examples of “use of self” (Use Of Personality, Use Of Belief System, Use Of Relationship Dynamics, Use Of Anxiety, and Use Of Self-Disclosure) with a critical reflection. Examples of critical reflection include assessing:
What was the impact of my “use of self” in this situation (impact on self, client, organization, etc.)?
How did I feel using myself in this way?
What (if anything) would I change about my approach?
Why did I make the choice to use the intervention I did? Was it something about the client? Me? The organizational structure?
What did I learn as a result of my “use of self” with this client?
An assessment of traits and strengths you bring to your work and the field of social work more generally. This may (but does not have to) include:
What strengths do you possess that you could integrate into your work?
What type of clients or settings would/have you have difficulty working with?
How do you view social work practice?
What values do you bring into your work?
