task is to find a case related to one of the remaining issues we have studied since mid-term:
War and Peace
Either beginning of life (abortion or IVF) or End of life (end-of-life care; physician-assisted suicide/euthanasia)
Politics and Media
Gender and Race
This assignment provides guidelines for students as they research and complete their papers.
Finding a Case Study
Decide whether you want to write on a case study related to war and peace; beginning or end of life healthcare issue; sexual ethics; or family life; politics and media; or gender and race.
You may choose one of the case studies in the Stivers text and do a more in-depth analysis of the case, using guidance from Zalot & Guevin and the Stivers commentary. OR You may select your own topic related to the one of the broader categories above and do an in-depth analysis of that topic.
If you do not have the textbooks, please contact me. Remember that I have posted PDFs of the readings in the modules.
Do whatever research you deem necessary to thoroughly address the case.
Follow the guidelines for the paper below…
Guidelines for your paper
The problem being addressed
What is the moral issue you are examining in the case you are using? Why is it a moral issue? This is worth 10 points; your explanation should go into some detail.
Background on the case
What is going on in the case you are evaluating? What are some relevant facts to be considered? This is worth 10 points; go into sufficient detail to warrant 10 points.
What principles of moral theology are relevant to this issue and helpful in resolving it? Explain the biblical or theological foundations of the principle and then explain how the principle(s) apply to the issue. You must use one or both of our texts and/or the Bible as sources for this part of the paper.
In this section of the paper I am looking for you to demonstrate an engagement with current events in the context of social justice.
State what you think the appropriate response to the case study would be for a practicing Christian and what principles would be most important. What are some arguments someone might make against the position above? Are those arguments persuasive to you?
The usual expectations with regard to written work are in force. Whenever you describe someething from the textbooks or any articles you use, you must PARAPHRASE and you MUST cite the source from which you have paraphrased using a citation style of your choice (e.g., APA; MLA; etc). All quotes from the texts or other sources must be cited and a works cited list or bibliography must be included or you are at risk of receiving a ZERO (0) on this assignment. That means using quotation marks when needed, paraphrasing as appropriate, and providing citations (including page numbers) in the body of the text and a REFERENCE/WORKS CITED list at the end. You do not need quotation marks when you paraphrase but you must cite the source. You must cite all ideas that come from the authors of any materials you use – not just quotes from the text. If ideas and quotes come from the same page, you can put the citation at the end of the paragraph.
