This “virtual” visit is not actually to a site, but to the largest religious gathering on Earth. Start by reading the brief Encyclopedia Britannica article on the Kumbh Mela, then browse the wikipedia entry and pick up points to discuss from sections that interest you. Then watch the two documentaries and the shorter interview film. Notice (and make note in your paper of) the differences between the more etic (or “outsider”) presentation in the PBS film versus the more emic (or “insider”) “Kumbh: Eternal Journey…” film.(i.e., what do you see in the video and other resources in terms of the setting, demographics of people visiting, how they use imagery and ritual, etc.). Obviously part of your paper will also be describing what you read or learned in the other linked resources (articles, webpages, etc.). Just like for an in-person site visits, the purpose is to make connections between what we have discussed about the religion in class and what you see in the materials for the ‘virtual’ visit.
The same writing rules from the writing assignment apply (i.e., 3 double spaced pages, avoiding plagiarism, etc.) apply. Please use quotation marks and provide a citation for any material that you are quoting (Townsend 23, or “Golden Temple Documentary” will be fine, as example citations).
