For Essay 3, we will add one more dimension to our discussions about literacy this semester: new media. Consider one of your favorite pieces of technology, film, television, videogames, music, social media, or books. These pieces of media directly affect the literacies that we have toward a variety of topics.
For example, in the essay “Representation of Disney Princesses in the Media,” Gill argues that news coverage of children’s cartoon characters could reinforce negative stereotypes about women, specifically citing “…distortions of Disney princesses likely have an important impact on young girls” (747). Gill argues that media “…describing [princesses] as weak or only portraying stereotypical feminine qualities…distort the public’s perception of these women” (747). Following this argument, the news influences young girls’ literacies of Disney princesses and, potentially, perceptions of themselves.
In another example, in Nicole Miles’ graphic essay, “Formation of a Caribbean Illustrator,” Miles reflects that she had difficulty illustrating characters of color (specifically, black characters) in her art because “…I’d never seen any good illustrated reference in the art style that I enjoyed so much” (709). Miles eventually concludes “…the lack of media representation of people who looked like me affected me even if I wasn’t aware of it” (711). Miles’ literacy did not account for characters of color because larger conversations in her field of study did not account for them.
For Essay 3, you should:
Identify a primary source that you will analyze to discuss the impact of the media on how we think and talk about the world around us. For example, how does the website WebMD change the way we go to the doctor or think about medical professionals?
Locate three secondary articles that you could use to further your discussion about your piece of media. For example, is there any research about the impact of WebMD? Are there government statistics about who goes to the doctor, and where?
Synthesize these sources with your own claims to write an essay that spans the length of 1000-15000 words, not including the Works Cited Page.
Incorporate mixed media and design during the analysis of your selected primary source.
Participate in a Peer Review process.
