The attack on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, was an attempt by Japan to knock the US Pacific Fleet out of the war in a single strike and allow Japanese forces a free hand in the following months to expand the Japanese sphere of influence in the Pacific. This attack on the naval base forced the United States to put in World War II. Pearl Harbor represents America in National Identity because the bombings were a pivotal moment in US history. The attacks forced the US into WW2, and it shaped America’s role in the world, making us a progressing country.
After the attack, the United States declared war on Japan. More than two years after the war, the United States entered the conflict. In the beginning, Japan thought it was right to attack the US after the confrontation between Washington and Tokyo. The United States planned to attack Japan, cut off its oil supply, and block the ocean trade. The US knew that this attack would be vital to Japan’s imperial power. When Japan figured this out, they thought an attack on Pearl Harbor would neutralize the American Pacific Fleet to allow Japan to settle its disputes in Asia. Later in September of that year, the war against the United States, Britain, and France was formally proposed in the Imperial Council.
The reason for this attack was because the United States placed an embargo on Japan. This embargo stopped Japan from receiving crucial materials. After Japan tried to take over more land and they wanted to achieve two things. First, they wanted the embargo lifted, then get territory and prepare for the war. Japan thought that the United States would disrupt their plans, so they decided to destroy Pearl Harbor as a precaution.
This Attack on Pearl Harbor had a significant impact on the area. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor crippled or destroyed nearly 20 American ships and more than 300 airplanes. Dry docks and airfields were likewise destroyed. Most important, 2,403 sailors, soldiers, and civilians were killed, and about 1,000 people were wounded. As soon as this happened, the United States would quickly declare war.
President Roosevelt declared war on Japan on December 7th. When the attack happened, the US started to become suspicious of Japanese Americans. The government raided people’s homes, and discrimination against Japanese people rose to a high. This resulted in President Roosevelt signing an executive order to put the Japanese people in internment camps. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war against the United States.
