I would like to start this discussion off by sharing a personal belief growing up that was embedded in my brain by my grandmother. I was told a way to stay healthy was never go to bed with a wet head, if you do you will wake up with a cold. Therefore, as a child, I never went to sleep with a wet head, because I did not want to wake up sick. One tradition the Swedish practice in order to protect their health is drink a spoonful of cod liver daily (Spector,2016). The Austrian culture eats fresh vegetables daily in order to protect their health (Spector,2016).
As nurses taking care of any patient that is from a different culture, we must first understand their culture and respect their wishes. As a nurse taking care of a Swedish patient, I can ensure they have their cod liver every day and assist them in taking it. I know that cod liver oil is high in omega-3 and other vital vitamins and minerals that can protect against health problems such as arthritis. As a nurse taking care of an Austrian patient, I can ensure the patient has their daily fresh vegetables. I also know that by eating these fresh vegetables daily my patient is getting their proper vitamin and mineral intake in order to stay healthy.

I’m sure many of us have tales of old home remedies that our grandmothers or great grandmothers believed in and passed on to us. One of the beliefs my grandmother passed down was when we had a sore throat or cold symptoms to rub Vick’s VapoRub on our necks and wrap a sock or scarf around it, and believe it or not this always helped. I learned a lot in this weeks reading about other cultures and their beliefs in maintaining and protecting their health. In Austrian culture they believe a big way to maintain their health is by eating fresh vegetables and a way the “protect” their health is by putting camphor around their necks in the winter season using a small cloth bag to prevent measles and scarlet fever (Spector, 2017). In the English culture, it is believed that maintaining health is done by keeping a window open at night, regardless of the season, and getting enough sleep. English traditions also believe that enforcement of lifestyle “protects” their health (Spector, 2017).
The nurse’s role in providing care to these different cultural groups is to first understand their culture and be able to respect their beliefs and preferences in healthcare, regardless of our own. One way this could be done in Austrian culture would be to make sure the patient has fresh vegetables at meal times. I feel like when we are able to provide things for our patients of different cultures that they value in their healthcare beliefs, such as the camphor for their necks, we are creating a trust between ourselves and them, and they are more comfortable and confident in their healthcare treatment.
