The text defines an informal leader as a leader who does not hold a formal position or have official authority over the group. The informal leader is looked at as a more behind the scenes player and can be a great asset to the formal leader. However, the formal leader must be accepted they do not know everything and may need assistance allowing the informal leader to assist them. In our text the theories explore the interaction of the followers and the leaders. Orem’s theory depicts nursing an active intelligent participant, throughout their nursing career, to the patient care who are educated as needed. Benner indicated that the follower is using what they learned in nursing school and experiences to guide their practice with a leader influencing the followers development stage progression. Lastly, we have Orlando’s theory, In Orlando theory the nurse uses their ideas and feeling in collaboration with their investigation of assumptions, or instinct, to guide their practices.
On the business theory side we have two, Kelley and Chaleff. In Kelley’s theory the followers dictate whether the leader thrives or dies and are identified by five styles. In Chaleff’s theory the role of followers is not as static as expected and that the identification of followership style will help to improve the individual as a follower. Both of the theory types, nursing and business, hold a focus on the improvement of the followers within each group.
Comparing the two theory groups devolves down to the priorities for improvements. With the Business theories we see a theme of follower improvements affect the productivity of the company and how the follower best fits within the organization. This is similar to the nursing theories that seem to encourage development of individual professional skill and experience to better the patient outcomes and overall instinct of the nurse.
