Flash writing– whether fiction or nonfiction– starts, as writer Susan Tekulve says, “…at the edge of or in the middle of the fire.” In other words, a flash piece doesn’t have time for set-up, for prologue, for backstory. It needs to begin at the height of or near to the conflict. The form demands that that writer ignites a spark through sharp images, voice, and syntax, and uses it to quickly draw the reader in to the story, almost as if we’ve been there all along.
Closely examine and unpack the way in which Hoffman and/or Saunders uses the techniques of flash writing in the pieces you read today. What do they do, how do they do it, and is it effective? What do you admire? What might you change?
