Here’s the main statement that I’d like you to base your thesis/position on (and you need to be clear on stating your side of the argument as your thesis statement):
The public school system of education in the United States of America needs to change.
Do you agree? Or disagree?
You’ll need to agree/disagree (one side or the other, no in betweens) and provide some ideas/thoughts to back your side of the argument.
To get you started, here are some sources that you can begin to read:
The “Yea” side:
Sir Ken Robinson “How Schools Kill Creativity” TED Talk (remember this one?): http://bit.ly/1CpFUzP
Finland’s recent change in education: http://ind.pn/1HaPv38
Truth in American Education website resources: http://truthinamericaneducation.com/
The “Nay” side:
“The U.S. Education System is Not Failing” article: http://bit.ly/1yiqkKp
“10 Things Public Education is Getting Right” article: http://bit.ly/1D2cpXp
“Why Gloomy Pundits and Politicians Are Wrong About America’s Education System” (The Atlantic): http://theatln.tc/1FrfR1z
These sources should get you started.
Remember, no matter which side of the argument you decide to take, you should address/rebuff the counter-arguments in this final paper for the course. Therefore, you should take a look at all sides of the argument before coming to your own position.
This paper will be five pages in length and be between 2500-3000 words. You will also need to include a Works Cited page in MLA format and use parenthetical citations when direct quoting, paraphrasing and/or summarizing your sources. I’ll provide information on all of these bits in upcoming modules.
I’m interested to see where you stand on this hot topic in education and politics. Education is still a hot topic in politics.
