You could focus on a specific artist and analyze their work at length (I would stick to one book or one theme across books).
You could choose to focus on a theme and see how that gets covered across the work of different artists—for instance, we looked at how community functioned in Hall’s collection of comics. Other possible themes: relationships (dating, friends, parents), AIDS + HIV, bars, violence, mental health, body positivity, discrimination, the city as a space, country/rural representation…this list is not exhaustive.
You could focus on specific identities and experiences (gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, lesbian, asexual, poly, non-binary).
I’m also very much open to creative project proposals that incorporate your original work as an artist and build on Essay #2. You do not need to choose from the artists or even topics we cover in class—we cannot possibly cover everything in one class. However, whatever you choose, it needs to center both–queer identities and comics.
