My project proposes to address morbid obesity with a specific target for those preparing for bariatric surgery. The science informing pre-surgical preparation proposes that when able a patient should work at losing at least 5 -10 % of their excess body weight before bariatric surgery. This is safer for the patient and the surgeon as it lessens complications during and after surgery. It reduces the size of the liver and abdominal fat to allow the surgeon to lift the liver and work on the stomach (Kalarchian et al., 2013). Knowing all this information, this DNP Essential becomes so vital and relevant for my CSP as well as any role I take up after DNP graduation.
Essential II: Organizational and systems leadership for quality improvement
This Essential is critical to improving patient and healthcare outcomes by eliminating health disparities and promoting patient safety and excellence in practice. It allows a DNP graduate to apply the principles of practice management for balancing productivity with quality of care considering the constant changes in the different health care settings. The skill of possessing organizational and systems leadership for quality improvement is needed now with my CSP project and later in any job I take after graduation from the DNP program. I will be prepared with sophisticated expertise in assessing organizations, identifying systems’ issues, and facilitating organization-wide changes in practice delivery.
Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Methods for Evidence-Based Practice
This Essential as stated in the document is the hallmark of doctoral education where the scholarship of discovery and integration “reflects the investigative and synthesizing traditions of academic life” (Boyer, p. 21). Where scholars give meaning to isolated facts, make connections across disciplines through integration, and generate evidence through their practice to guide improvements. The application of knowledge to solve problems follows therefore, in my CSP and later practice I will focus on the translation of new science, its application, and evaluation to generate evidence through practice to guide improvements in morbidly obese patients.
Essential IV: Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care
As far as my CSP is concerned, Essential IV: Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care will assist in facilitating recording food journals and an exercise regimen implemented by a mobile health app in conjunction with a comprehensive NP-led educative behavior modification program. The implementation of this technology will enhance accountability and promote self-discipline and control needed to lose weight consistently. It will be used the same way in practice later on after graduation to improve the health outcomes of any population I take care of.
