Ethical Knowledge in Development of Emancipatory Knowledge Emancipatory knowledge encourages nurses to recognize the social injustices inherent in the socio-political and other institutional structures of the community, empowers them to expose the unfairness in the system, and act to affect changes in the status quo through collaborations with others to change the socio-political system and improve the lives of individuals in the community (Chinn & Kramer, 2017). It requires awareness of the possibility that the existing community social structures could be supportive of the unjust social condition, thus altering them may lead to positive outcomes (Chinn & Kramer, 2017). Chinn & Kramer (2017) posit that asking the question “who benefits from this situation?” in an unfair situation facilitates the development of emancipatory knowledge by creating the awareness for a clinician to go beyond their individual professional experiences to learn from others and find solutions to broader socio-political issues.
One aspect of the work environment is the organizational communication system. The trust employees have in an organization depends on the openness of communication systems and transparency between managers and employees (Verburg et al., 2018). The workplace’s communication system is open and two-sided, allowing employees to offer feedback to the management. The openness and transparency of the organization’s communication system positively impact ethical decision-making by enabling employees to raise managers’ issues and provide insight into practices and procedures.
A second aspect of the work environment is the organization policy and procedure prohibiting the provision of a high level of treatment to uninsured patients who cannot afford the high cost of medical treatment. The lack of insurance covers interrupts the care process as clinicians cannot offer the uninsured patients treatment as per organization policy. Patients are assessed for the ability to cater to their healthcare cost before the care is provided, lack of insurance, and ability to pay in cash interrupt and block the provision of high-quality care to patients (Seo et al., 2019), which negatively impacts the clinicians’ ethical decision-making. Even though delivering care is ethically required, the organizational policy prevents care delivery to an underserved population group that needs it most but cannot afford the cost.
