Research Paper on a comic book that shows the influence of women of power in the 1980’s-90’s
The research paper is intended to provide you with the opportunity to more fully explore your class topic, as well as examine it from a more empirical perspective. The paper should be approximately 10 pages in length (including references). It should consist of at least two (2) scholarly research articles from reputable journals (or book sources).Inclusion of materials from news, popular sources, or the web can be used in the paper, but do not count toward the scholarly requirement. The paper will be written in APA style, or one of the major academic styles used in your discipline (MLA, Turabian, Chicago, etc).
Basic outline (most successful papers have the following, numbers of paragraphs vary):
Introduction (1-2 paragraphs introducing the topic)
Literature Review (3-4 paragraphs presenting what previous work has been done, what other sources have elements important for your work)
Research questions (if applicable) and presentation of case/method (2-3 paragraphs about what you planned to do, how you were investigating the topic)
Analysis (3-4 paragraphs, What did you find?)
Conclusions and discussion (3-4 paragraphs, what are the implications? What do your findings add to the discussion? What future research do you now see as important?)
Some writing tips:
Use the active voice instead of the passive voice (Write “Readers visited the site 1,138 times,” instead of “The site was visited by readers 1,138 times.”)
Proofread carefully for spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.
Most writing should use the third person. The use of first person singular tense is acceptable when referring to oneself, but first person plural (“we,” “us”) and second person (“you,” “your”) are often vague and come across as arrogant. Write in clear, organized paragraphs of appropriate length. A paragraph is usually more than two sentences, but generally shorter than a page.
Use a variety of sentences structures (simple, compound, and complex) in order to avoid boring your readers. Always write in complete sentences.
Scrutinize your use of punctuation to ensure it is correct. The use of commas, semicolons, and colons are an ongoing difficulty for many students.
Avoid exclamation points in academic writing!
Avoid universalizing language that assumes everyone has the same resources (“Since everyone has a smartphone, it’s important to know…”) or the same experiences (“Everyone goes on a summer vacation.”). Generally avoid universal terms like “everyone,” “no one,” “always,” “never.”
Include a clearly-defined thesis statement and a preview of the main points.
