Each director knew they would be called on to motivate and direct their diverse staff for success in leading the Association’s new direction, all of whom had different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. There were people at all levels, including volunteers and interns. Each director had to avoid the impulse to micromanage the staff, but they couldn’t be hands-off either. They knew they would have to empower the staff more and improve on communication so the strategic and tactical plans and expectations would be clear to all. They also knew from experience that teams and committees tended to fall into a groupthink and/or status quo mentality. This would have to change for the strategic and tactical plans to succeed. Charles asked each of the directors to describe the way they intended to approach leading their departments to carry out their plans effectively.
