Language Difference between Genders
Language can sometimes be interpreted differently among the different genders that are male and female. For instance, when a woman addresses a crowd, the male gender in the crowd will interpret her language differently than the interpretation she will get from her fellow females in the crowd and vice versa (Siregar, 2017). From the cartoon illustration provided for this discussion, it is evident that while a male speaker is addressing the crowd, the male listener in the audience thinks that the speaker’s language is forceful, confident and clear. In contrast, the female listener thinks of the speaker’s language as patronizing arrogant and abrupt. The male listener supports the male speaker’s language while addressing them, but the female listener disapproves and criticizes his language. The female listener supports the language that the female speaker uses and thinks of it as gutsy, outspoken and strong. In contrast, the male listener disapproves of the language that she uses and views it as pushy, obnoxious and shriek.
Men and women have different ways of viewing the languages that are used by the opposite gender. At most times, men view an authoritative woman as bossy and women view an authoritative man as arrogant and selfish (Hasanah, 2020). An example of such situations is when I was young; adults used to tell my other girlfriends and me that females should always be polite and kind while addressing other people. These talks have influenced the reaction that men have on women who speak their mind and are authoritative in their class or work places. Another example is that I once encountered a man who was not respected by his employees because they viewed his language as soft and undemanding. People’s perspectives on the languages portrayed by male and female gender should not be misinterpreted to affect people negatively. A person’s language depends on a person’s character and not on their gender. The male gender should not be criticized when they use polite language, and the female gender should not be shamed for being authoritative.
