During, the XIX and XX centuries, the United States instilled that disdain among other Caribbean and Latin American nations.
That disdain was particularly instilled among Dominicans. First, when US diplomats racialized Haitians as blacks and savages and Dominicans as Hispanics and Catholics.
Second, at the beginning of the XX century, the United States occupied both countries and the racialization took a deeper approach.
In Haiti, the United States divided the nation racially:
mulattoes (10 percent of the population) vs blacks (90 percent of the pop.)
mulattoes were more advanced than blacks. Mulattoes were intellectuals and spoke French. Mulattoes are destined to be the political leaders of Haiti.
Blacks were destined to be peasants and sugar cane cutters in the Dominican Republic.
In the Dominican Republic, the United States divided Dominicans from Haitians.
Once again, Dominicans were superior
Dominicans must defend their Hispanic and Catholic identity from the Haitian menace.
In order to establish a “sounded” racial division, American media and writers constructed the “other.”
