Please only use ONE of the two questionnaires (there is a separate set of questions for couples vs families). You must interview either a couple (not including yourself and your spouse) or a family (parent(s) + participating child(ren) must be present). Important: If you are interviewing a couple (no children participating), you must use the Couples Interview Questionnaire. If you are interviewing a family (single parent + participating child(ren) or parents + participating child(ren)) , you must use the Family Interview Questionnaire. You may also add additional questions as you see fit (note: please do not ask questions regarding to sensitive topics such as sexual practices), but at a minimum you must ask all the questions provided in the guide.
SOC 323 – Interview Questionnaire for Couples and Families.docx Click for more options Note: This link contains both sets of questionnaires. Remember to only choose the appropriate one to use (based on criteria above) and that if you are interviewing a family, the parent(s) + child(ren) (not babies or toddlers) must participate. Responses to each question should be thorough and detailed. If not, it is customary for the interviewer to probe and ask for details/clarification. Remember, the more detailed the responses, the more you have to work with for your final paper (critical assignment part 2). Students will interview a couple OR family of their choice (Note: Students may not interview themselves, their spouses or significant other) using an interview guide, which is provided. Both individuals from the couple must be present and participating for the “couples interview” and parent(s) + child(ren) must be present and participating for the “family interview”. Interviews should be recorded and responses then transcribed in verbatim.
This assignment requires knowledge of social scientific research methodology. For those not familiar with qualitative interviewing, please read this short introduction: http://sociology.about.com/od/Research-Methods/a/Interviews.htm As a note, qualitative interviewing provides a method for collecting rich and detailed information about how individuals experience, understand and explain events in their lives. While the main questions will help establish the topic of discussion, most interviewees will only have a general idea of the interviewer’s goals and the level of depth that the interviewer is looking for in their responses. Follow up questions, probing questions, and reframing the question may be necessary to elicit a detailed response. It is important that students record and transcribe the interviewee’s responses in verbatim to preserve his/her/their “voice”. It is also important to take note of paralinguistic behaviors as this paints a richer overall picture of the interaction dynamic. Do NOT summarize or paraphrase responses. Note: Responses can be typed directly into the interview guide and submitted for credit.
Here is the format to follow: Q1: Type out question if different from what is on interview guide or leave as is Name of speaker 1 : Type response exactly as given. Do not summarize or paraphrase. Name of speaker 2: Type response exactly as given. Do not summarize or paraphrase.
Name of speaker 3 (and so on): ” ” (Note anything that cannot be ascertained from the verbal response such as paralinguistics, tone, pauses, laughter, etc). Q2: Repeat process
Example:
1. What are your ages?
Annie: I am 50 (looks down shyly)
Robert: I am 52 (looks at Annie and smiles)
This assignment will be graded based on the following criteria:
Each question and response is transcribed in verbatim
Notes relating to paralinguistics, body language, etc are placed in parentheses Quality of responses (e.g. thorough responses are stronger than brief/cursory responses)
Note: You are responsible for submitting the full typed transcript of the interview (in verbatim). You do not need to submit the audio or video recording.
