Assignment and Guidelines:
Review, summarize, and critique as necessary the scientific literature relating the damage
done by Superstorm Sandy in 2012 to rising sea levels.
Superstorm (formerly Hurricane) Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City, New Jersey
very late on the night of October 29th, 2012. Although it was no longer technically a
hurricane, it had sustained winds over 75 mph and caused extensive flooding in and
around New York City, including massive flooding in lower Manhattan that even
inundated parts of the city subway system.
I want you to write a formal, scientific, and analytical review essay that (1) briefly
summarizes the history of Superstorm Sandy and the damage it did to New York City and
surrounding areas, (2) includes discussion of whether the storm itself was unusual (e.g.
do hurricanes sometimes hit New England and the northeastern United States?), (3)
connects the damage done by Sandy to both the characteristics of the storm (size, winds,
rains, and timing with respect to local tides) as well as the potential influence of sea level
rise. In your essay, you should come to a conclusion about the relative contribution of
sea level rise to the destruction done by Superstorm Sandy.
Resources and Citations
You may use only the follow resources: (1) peer reviewed scientific journal articles, (2)
federal or local government reports (National Weather Service, New York City, etc.), (3)
insurance company reports, (4) legal documents, (5) books published by scientists, (6)
government or scientific databases (e.g. on sea level rise, historic hurricane paths, etc.)
You should use at least 5 citations.
