Test 5 for the Plastics & Agriculture Units
Choose either ONE of the following two activities.
1. Grow something you can eat. If you don’t have space outdoors, try sprouting seeds in a glass jar (https://www.culturesforhealth.com/learn/sprouting/how-to-sprout-seeds-jar/) or grow some wheat grass in a little container on a windowsill (if you have cats, they’ll enjoy it and if you don’t you can juice it). You will turn in a record, with photos, of what you do each day in order to grow your plant. Write a few paragraphs explaining what your plant needs to grow — some of that is super obvious and some of it is not. Which of these factors are in your control, and which are not?
2. Track your plastic use. First, save all the plastic that you use in one ordinary day (when you are not consciously trying to do anything different) and photograph it before you throw it away. Then, for one day, try to minimize your plastic use as much as you can. At the end of the day, photograph the plastic you did use along with any reusuables you substituted. Then, write a couple of paragraphs explaining which plastics you find it easy to stop using and why, and which you find difficult to stop using and why. Write about all the invisible (upstream) plastic you used– for example, if you ate out, there was plastic packaging that the restaurant threw away before you saw it. Write about what you are going to do with your plastic — can any of it be reused? Repurposed? What do you know about the resin codes and the toxicity? Show off anything else you learned in the toxics unit.
