English 102 Research Paper
Assignment: You will write a ten (10) pages long research paper that uses academic sources to explore a question, articulate an informed position on an issue, and make a well-reasoned argument based on your analysis of the research. Furthermore, it proceeds according to a line of reasoning that supports the argument. You should also address the opposing views effectively as well as respond to readers’ foreseeable objections as well. Please note that this is neither a Pro or Con Essay nor simply an informed summary of a topic based on secondary sources.
You can choose your topic with the instructor’s approval. Research Paper Requirements:
Length: Must be ten (10) pages long (excluding the works cited page).
Thesis Statement: As you know, a thesis statement is the main idea of your paper. Furthermore, it answers the research question, and all the information in your paper should work to support it.
Evidence: Your researched evidence should be relevant and sufficient to support your argument.
Reasoning: It explains the logical connection between the evidence and conclusions. Sources: You must use ten (10) secondary sources, including minimum of three (3) scholarly sources and minimum of seven (7) sources from one of the library research databases. Wikipedia, encyclopedias, dictionaries and popular magazines (Readers Digest, Sports Illustrated, etc.) are not suitable academic sources. If you are in doubt about the appropriateness of your sources, please check with me.
Use of Sources: Summaries, paraphrases, quotations and critiques are used, as needed, to support, define, illustrate, clarify and/or oppose. Organization: Information is organized appropriately to maintain the unity of the main idea. In addition, transitions are used effectively to connect ideas with one another for coherence.
Point of View: The point of view for this paper will be in the third person. Therefore, you must consistently maintain this point of view.
Language: Remember, your paper must follow the basic conventions of standard American written English. Therefore, correct mechanics, usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure are essential.
Documentation: Remember to follow the MLA guidelines for formatting your paper and in-text citations. Works Cited: List all sources you have used in your paper in the MLA Style. Grading Rubric: Your research paper will be graded as per the English Department Grading Standards.
Due Date: Final Draft to be submitted by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, December 8th. Important Reminders:
Research papers that are not ten (10) pages long (excluding works cited page) automatically fail.
Research papers that do not utilize ten sources automatically fail as well. Also, points will be deducted from papers that rely too heavily on source material or those that incorporate more than ten sources.
Research papers containing plagiarized ideas also fail automatically.
Research papers that meet the minimum requirements may not pass due to other factors such as faulty logic and improper grammar.
