Find something people argue about in “Hero vs. Villain” terms. Show specific ways you believe
the topic has been oversimplified by that way of thinking and arguing, and make your own
argument for how it should be seen. Be sure to explain why you think it’s important that people
see this thing more clearly (whether it’s a single creative work, a political issue, a cultural

Do this in about 7 pages, using at least 4 sources to inform and support your argument. At least
1 source must come through database research. The other 3 can come from anywhere else.
Format this essay in MLA style (see The Little Seagull Handbook, pp. 158-169).

• In your intro, give a clear picture of the major alternate views in the conversation
you’re entering: explain different things “They Say” about the thing you’re
writing about
• In your intro, indicate why the argument matters or could be of interest to readers
• Distinguish clearly what “You Say” from what “They Say”—first, by stating your
overall position clearly in a qualified thesis near the beginning of your essay
(ideally at the end of the first or second paragraph); then, by doing so throughout
your paper every time you bring up an alternate view
• Make a clear, thorough, and convincing argument, demonstrating careful thinking
about the topic and/or original insights about it
• Respond effectively to alternate views (different things “They Say”)
2. [30 pts.] Support and Organization of Ideas
• Support your points with clear and logical reasoning (explanations, examples,
analogies, etc.)
• Make effective use of a variety of sources (4 minimum) to support your points
• Explain how each piece of evidence you cite supports the point you want it to
• Organize your essay effectively: by making sure all paragraphs relate clearly to
your main point and to each other; by making sure each paragraph stays on topic;
and by transitioning effectively between major ideas, paragraphs, and sentences
3. [20 pts.] Language and Style
• Use clear, effective language: demonstrating college-level control of grammar,
word choice, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling
• Follow MLA style: (a) overall essay format, (b) in-text citations, (c) Works Cited
