The text that the essay needs to be written on is “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. Argue that “Everyday Use” helps us better understand the sociological implications that played a role during the civil rights movement, especially for African Americans. It’s an argument because you will be defending your claim/thesis with research and textual evidence, as someone could come in and disagree with the previous claim.
Assignment Description Your final formal writing assignment is to write an argument synthesis following proper MLA guidelines with cross curriculum examination in mind. For this essay, you will choose one of the texts from below. Once a text has been chosen, you will develop an argumentative thesis that showcases how the text betters our understanding of the ideas/concepts of another field outside of English. For example, one could choose “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and make the claim that the story helps readers better understand the concept of Utilitarian thought studied within Philosophy courses. This is just one example of course, and many different combinations can be served.
This is an argumentative essay and should therefore use modes of argumentation in your writing such as Rogerian argument, logos/ethos/pathos, and an awareness of avoiding potential logical fallacies (which are covered in various lecture videos towards the bottom of the content page). Things to consider:
• The thesis should be a claim rooted in argumentation. In what way does the selected text elevate the concepts of the selected field? If you believe the text is not adequately enhancing the reader’s understanding of the outside concept, be sure to argue for that claim.
• What do other experts (your secondary sources) have to say on this subject, and how do their views influence your argumentation?
• What might opponents of your argument say? How might you prove them wrong?
• Why does your argument matter?
Requirements: Six pages (meaning you need to hit the 6th page). I am also requiring at least five academic secondary sources make it within the paper (the story doesn’t count towards this).
Some tips:
1. Choose a workable topic. Some theses will be so basic that you’ll never get 6 pages out of them. Conversely, some topics need to be avoided because they would require much more space than 6 pages to argue well. Make sure you map your paper out beforehand so that you know what you want to argue and how you’re going to argue it.
2. Use quotes from the story to help support your opinions. Quotes are not simply space fillers, and therefore, each quote MUST fit your argument. Each quote must help explain or prove the claims made by the thesis. Lastly, each quote needs an introduction and some explanation, which will show why you’re quoting what you’re quoting and what the quote means.
3. Remember what you know about good writing. Be sure that your introduction is clear and inviting. Your thesis needs to be clearly stated in the introductory paragraph, and the remainder of your paper needs to support the thesis. Organize your paragraphs effectively, and constantly check to see that every portion of your argument supports the thesis. Help your readers stay on track by using good topic sentences. Edit and proofread your draft before you turn it in.
4. Remember what you know about conducting research. You all went through and passed ENG 101, so you should be able to do adequate research. Remember the concepts learned in 101 and throughout this course and apply them in this paper.
5. Use the resources available to you through the library databases, the syllabus reading list, and services such as the SSTC and Writing Center.
6. Don’t forget that the essay is an argument.
