based on the essay The civil war in Syria
The Syrian civil war is one war that arose amid a peaceful protest that sought the resignation of the
then Syrian president eight years ago (International Crisis Group). Civilians in isolated areas of
Syria collectively sought to campaign against the president because of what they termed as gross
misconduct by the government in handling government issues and its civilians and infringing
democratic rights. The demonstrations were ascribed to instigating the civil war and brought
forward genuine reasons for the pro-democracy protests that were aimed at the government (Landis
pp. 75). Some of the reasons included low employment levels in the country and a lack of political
freedom. It is under such circumstances that the foundation of the Syrian war was laid bare.
However, despite the main cause of the Syrian war arising from the domestic protest against the
government, the role of foreign governments remains controversial and negative hence the basis of
the argument that foreign interventions lead to the escalation of the Syrian civilian war.
Negative Foreign Interventions
The role of foreign countries, as highlighted above, was very controversial, depending on one’s
perspective. First, various foreign governments friendly to the Syrian government sent military
equipment to help curb an uprising in Syria. As noted at the beginning of the Syrian civil unrest,
major divisions were evident within the regional countries around Syria.
Neighboring countries such as Iran and Lebanon were longtime friends of the Syrian government
and viewed the uprising as a threat to the regime. As a result, they opted to send military assistance
to help the government in curbing the uprising. These efforts were not taken lightly by the rebels
within Syria, and they opted to resist even further. After a few attacks on rebels by government-led
forces to quell them down, the resurgence of the civil unrest grew in bounds. Thus, the interference
of foreign governments such as Iran and Syria led to the militarization of what was a peaceful
protest, which escalated the demonstration (Van Dam pp. 2). Furthermore, the foreign forces loyal
to the government provided money and military personnel to government forces, which played a
role in turning Syrian streets into battlegrounds.
Secondly, with foreign countries loyal to the government providing weapons and military personal
to the government, the opposition was left defenseless and needed vast help to match the
government forces. At this point, the peaceful demonstrations were no longer peaceful, with armed
combat starting to shape up in what later turned out to be one of the greatest civil wars in the world.
Nonetheless, foreign countries against the Syrian government saw it fit to level the playing ground
as they viewed the opposition’s claims and wants to be valid. Countries like Saudi Arabia got into
the scene, throwing their support to the country’s opposition forces. Similar to Iran and Lebanon,
Saudi Arabia funded the opposition with money, arms, and equipment to combat the government
forces (Hinnebusch pp. 96). What’s more, Saudi Arabia did not use similar criteria as governments
loyal to the Syrian government, as they just equipped militant groups in Syria, especially the
Islamist militant groups like the Army of Islam, and did not send militant forces of their own. The
main objective of Saudi Arabia was to limit the influence of Iran in the Middle East since Iran was
actively involved in Syria’s political issues. This aspect played a crucial role in escalating the war in
Syria as the
opposition grew stronger.
On the other hand, other foreign countries that appeared neutral also played a key role in shaping
the Syrian war negatively. For instance, Turkey is a country that was very vocal in the Syrian civil
war. Turkey reinstated its conservative and preventive approaches in its involvement in the Syrian
civil war. However, their involvement was marred by ethnic differences that they brought into the
Syrian war at some point. This was when the Turkey government threw its support on the non-
Kurdish Syrian opposition. Turkey allowed non-Kurdish militants from Turkey to gain access to
Syria to fight Kurdish fighters in northern Syria, which accelerated the country’s civil war. Thus,
Turkey used the Syrian civil war to pursue its long-standing skirmish with the Kurds at the expense
of instability and political turmoil in Syria. This decision highlighted the role of foreign countries in
expediting the Syrian civil war.
As discussed in the above sections, the Syrian war was indeed started domestically. However, the
involvement of foreign governments that had taken part in the war influenced the nature of the civil
war, as divisions were witnessed between the civilians and militant fighters. Nonetheless, the
presence of foreign forces and back up in itself was debatable and eye-catching.
Positive Foreign Interventions
As the Syrian civil war got underway, the emergence of extremist groups who took over the civil
war became a worrying thought to some foreign countries. For instance, the United States saw a
looming threat when extremist groups such as Islamic State started gaining ground in Syria’s civil
war. Thus, America’s involvement in the Syrian war did not expedite the Syrian war but aimed to
de-escalate the war and tensions within the region (Watson). The

United States’ role in the Syrian war was to eliminate the influence of Islamic State groups and stop
them from gaining a foothold in the country. Furthermore, crimes against humanity were the main
motivator for the United States government, as claimed by the United States president at the time,
Barack Obama. Thus, in as much as foreign government involvement was catastrophic in Syria and
a cause of major military action, the United States’ involvement was quite different since their
ideologies and motivation were aimed at bringing an end to the war and protecting the country’s
citizens as they claimed.
On the other hand, countries such as Germany were also involved in the Syrian war extensively.
However, unlike other countries, Germany’s involvement was quite similar to that of the United
States. They aimed not to fight alongside either group but bring an end to the war. Germany was
one of the countries involved the most in providing humanitarian assistance to Syrian civilians who
had been caught up in the civil war (Ziadeh pp. 4). Besides, the government offered to broker a deal
between the Syrian government and rebel forces that would see a peace deal reached without war.
Furthermore, Germany’s aid was one tactic that would see foreign countries withdraw their troops
and funding of the war. Therefore, while other countries’ involvement saw the intensifying of the
civil war, Germany’s involvement was contrasting since it aimed to de-escalate the war and find
peace. Moreover, their involvement was unprejudiced as they sort to find common ground for both
parties. Nevertheless, Germany gave a helping hand to those affected by the war from both sides,
unlike other countries that took partisan stands.
Lastly, another country, France, participated in the Syrian war in her way. France was responsible
for supplying medical supplies in the country during the civil war, which saw them being targeted
by extremist groups. France’s involvement in the Syrian civil war began with the conditioning of
peace talks between the government and rebellion groups. From this, France’s
