Choose a poem or story from the semester to use as the focal point of your essay. Use at least two outside sources (along with the entry for the piece you’re analyzing; you should have three sources all together). The essay can move in one of two directions:
1. Author Biography: Identify prominent themes in the poem/story, and, if possible, see if you can identify similar themes in their other work, as well. Do some research into the author’s life, and try to draw some connections between their personal experiences and the themes that appear in their work. In what ways do the author’s life/experiences influence or dictate their writing? Identify specific examples from at least two sources, and connect them with specific examples from the poem or story.
2. Social/Cultural/Historical Context: Do some research into the social, cultural, or historical elements within the story or poem, and try to identify the context that helped inspire the author to write this particular piece. How does this context influence or dictate the themes in the work? Use specific examples from at least two sources, and connect them with passages from the poem/story.
