Worksheet 3 — Three Films by Godard
Please upload your PDF file to this folder by 10 AM the morning of class. However, I’d rather see a good piece of writing from you rather than have you upload your file half-done. Please name your field with your last name as the first part of the filename. Please put your name in the file as well.
For this exercise, I’d also like you to have a title for your essay.
“Godard’s Vivre Sa Vie” (AI) “Godard” (SORW)
Viewing (three films by Jean-Luc Godard):
Vivre Sa Vie [My Life to Live] (1962) Alphaville (1965)
All three of these films are available on Kanopy or Youtube, etc. Altogether, this is about 4.5 hours of film viewing. The reading is 55 pages.
There is also a pretty good short documentary, “Discovering Godard,” on Kanopy as well.
You should probably watch Vivre Sa Vie before you read Sontag’s essay on it since she refers often to that film and it might clarify a few things for you. Breathless is, in general, the most “accessible” film and probably his most successful in the US. Alphaville is just plain weird and fun, but one of my favorites by him. The longer, later essay, “Godard,” will make the most sense after you’ve viewed the three films.
Words / phrases to look up:
2. “Causality” (in the philosophical sense, not just the everyday usage of the word)
3. “Auteur theory”
I’d like you to write about 600-750 about all three of the films together in relation to Sontag’s ideas. Think of this like a short midterm paper to the degree that I’d like you to have a clear thesis of some sort. Use the notes I made on the essays below to help you pick which element of the three films you would like to examine closely.
“Cinema is the truth twenty-four times a second”
In her essay on Vivre Sa Vie and the longer one on Godard’s work as a whole, Sontag makes sev- eral statements that are worth keeping in mind:
