Topic #1 – Compare a national TV network’s newscast with one of the following news sources
online: Politico, BBC, APNews, The Economist, Reuters, or Wall Street Journal. Write a report
addressing the types of news covered, the substance of its content, the type of advertising it
carries, the political slant (if any), the fairness/balance of the editorial page/broadcast, and
anything else of interest. Research what company owns each media outlet. Also look at the
“newsmakers” (people quoted in the stories) – including gender, age, ethnicity, etc. It might also
be helpful to answer the six journalistic questions (Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?) for
each of the media stories studied to determine if information was the same or differed. Be sure
to include a reference to the date studied. Place most of your focus on the compare/contrast
angle; please don’t waste time/space re-telling the specifics of individual news stories.
Topic #2 – Compare a 10:00PM local broadcast newscast with the following day’s local news
coverage from a news/talk radio station or non-commercial station’s news coverage. Write a
report addressing the types of news covered, the substance of its content, the type of advertising
it carries, the political slant (if any), the fairness/balance of the editorial page/broadcast, and
anything else of interest.
Be sure
to include a reference to the broadcast date studied. Place most of your focus on the
compare/contrast angle; please don’t waste time/space re-telling the specifics of individual news
stories.
Topic #3 – Select a narrative (fictional) program that is currently running, either on a television
outlet or streaming service. Select another television program from the same genre that ended
its run some time before 2000. (For example, if you select the current police drama “Blue
Bloods” airing on CBS, you might select “Dragnet” or “Adam-12”. If you need assistance selecting
a pre-2000 program, email me the name of the current show you want to watch and I can select
an older show for you.) Watch at least two different episodes of each television program.
Analyze what behaviors are repeatedly observed in each show, what influence these behaviors
may have on individuals who watch the program regularly, what stereotypes are reinforced by
the program, and what long-term effects may result from the program. Discuss how the two
programs compare in stereotypes, and what this might suggest about
how their respective time
periods view social issues.
Topic #4 – Select a narrative (fictional) program that is currently running on broadcast television.
Select a program from the same genre streaming online only. Watch at least two different
episodes of each television program. Observe how violence, sexuality, and controversial social
issues are portrayed. Discuss how the two programs compare in their portrayal of violence,
2
sexuality, and social issues. For the broadcast outlet, describe the advertising content. Who is the
target audience, and how might this affect what is shown in the program? For the streaming
outlet, what is the business model? Is this a subscription service that is part of a package of
services, like Amazon Prime? Is it a stand-alone subscription service, like Netflix? Is it a hybrid
model, where you can access content with ads for free and upgrade to a premium subscription?
How might this choice of business model impact what the programmers are willing to show?
I. Choose a topic
II. Identify sources (media to be analyzed: printed, video, or online) and gather
information (the content to be analyzed)
III. Check out secondary sources (what have other people written about the media content
you are about to analyze). You will want to use the chapters in the text that are relevant
to your topic to inform your analysis. You will likely need to jump ahead in the readings
to examine those chapters. Don’t wait until we get to them.
IV. Write your paper (the first draft)
V. Revise (gather missing info and edit)
VI. Proofread
VII. Submit paper by deadline
