Reciprocity is the best explanation for why DITF and other sequential messaging request work as persuasive tools. In the video lecture I provided my own example of DITF when I discussed my interaction with the older woman who was selling mango salsa in HEB. In this step I want you to conduct your own experiment with reciprocity. You will run your experiment a total of 5 times with new people each time. In your lecture activity you will detail your experiment, how it meets the requirements for reciprocity and/or DITF and the results of each of your 5 attempts. Note, you may write up your experiment, or explain it in a video, or create a PowerPoint. Scenarios should be as original and personal to you as possible, so be very detailed in your post. I have typed up two potential scenarios that would work as an experiment for this step. Keep in mind that these persuasive tactics can be used via Zoom, on a phone call, through a text message chain, etc. Although these examples involved people, there is no need to meet people in person to complete this assignment.
An example may look like the following (you cannot use my examples):
Experiment Using DITF: I wanted to use reciprocity and DITF together to see if I could persuade someone to purchase a coffee for me at Starbucks. With 5 different people I ran the following sequence: 1. I’d ask them to purchase me a grande latte because I forgot my wallet at home but need to study. I assume they would say no, because that’s about a $5 order. When they said no, I replied ok could you buy me a tall plain coffee instead. Note: If people say yes, it is your ethical responsibility to inform them this was an experiment and refuse for them to buy you anything. Don’t actually take something from anyone for this assignment. If they offer, say thank you but this was an experiment for a class assignment.
Experiment Using Reciprocity: I approached a student in the library and presented them with a new pen Baylor pen. After they took the pen I asked if they would sign up for a volunteer group I was a part of here on campus. Because I had just given them some Baylor swag, I hypothesized they would more likely say yes to my request they join my student organization as a volunteer due to reciprocity.
If you choose to write up your results, they should be at least 1 page detailing your experiment, the five distinct scenarios and audiences you ran your experiment on, how each round of your experiment went, and finally whether it was a failure or success. If you make a video or other elements, they would need to equal a page worth’s of writing.
