Write a paper of 900 to 1,200 words in which you research and analyze one contemporary issue or controversy in mass media. Demonstrate mastery over the topic and understanding of various sides of the issue. Then, discuss how this issue or controversy could best be resolved. You are not limited to the topics or issues addressed in class materials, but you should feel free to expand an earlier paper to fit this assignment if you choose to do so.

Be sure to touch on one or more of our key concepts for thinking about mass and digital media. You don’t have to name them — just be sure that they’re part of the foundation of your thinking.
Do enough library research to provide adequate understanding of the topic. There is no magic number of sources, but experience suggests that a solid research effort will enhance your paper. The best papers are built on a foundation of good research. Remember: This school’s library website offers access to many databases that offer coverage of essentially the entirety of media history. Do not rely on random websites or Wikipedia.
Cite your sources, either in a formal works cited page or in the text of the paper itself, journalism-style. (Example: “According to an essay Anna Merlan wrote for Vox last May, ….”) Be sure that it is clear where you got your information.
A tip: It’s a good idea to frame your topic in the form of question or a conclusion. Here are some examples:
“Should the federal government have the power to require social media platforms to prevent users’ spread of misinformation?”
“How can any but the most popular musicians survive on the negligible royalties that Spotify and other streaming services pay them?”
“Can piracy ever be stopped on the internet?”
“Will movie theaters survive COVID?”
“Why does representation matter in movies/TV?”
“How should news organizations handle misinformation and conspiracy theories being spread by public officials?”
“Should social media companies be in the business of policing their users’ speech?”
Also: If I’ve ever said to you “You need to proofread” make sure you do so on this assignment.
