If a survey question is written or presented in such a manner that it tilts individuals toward a particular answer, it is biased. When your survey questions are difficult to comprehend, it makes it harder for consumers to answer honestly. Poorly constructed survey questionnaires result in inaccurate responses and a wasted chance to understand the consumer experience in either case. Leading questions affect people’s answers in one direction or the other, rather than allowing for impartiality. Leading inquiries are probably known to anybody who watches courtroom dramas. The lawyer raises an objection for “leading the witness,” or putting words in the witness’s mouth, after seeing the harangue. Leading questions in a trial are generally detailed and indicate what a witness has gone through, rather than allowing the witness to describe what happened. In a customer survey, you want to allow your consumers to offer an accurate description of their experience rather than telling them how they should feel about it. Your survey’s objective should be to elicit an honest response that provides insight and feedback on the customer experience. A loaded question is one that makes a guess about a customer’s habits or views. People accidentally agree or disagree with an implied message while answering the question.
