Sponsors, as I have come to think of them, are any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach or model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy—and gain advantage by it in some way.”
So far this semester, we have talked about literacy and the forces that work with and against literacy. For your second paper of the semester, I want you to go back through the following reading assignments and look for common themes:
Grant Penrod “Anti-Intellectualism: Why we Hate the Smart Kids”
Amy Tan “Mother Tongue”
Daniel Felsenfeld “Rebel Music”
Tanya Maria Barrientos “Se Habla Espanol”
Christopher Beha “Leveling the Field”
Mike Rose “Blue Collar Brilliance”
Jonathan Kozol “Freemont High School”
Stanley Fish “What Colleges Should Teach”
Lynn Bloom “Freshman Composition as a Middle Class Enterprise”
Then I want you to look at Deborah Brandt’s article we read, “Sponsors of Literacy” and see how this reading speak to Brandt’s article. Some things to consider:
How do these articles support Brandt’s arguments in her essay?
How do these articles conflict with Brandt’s arguments?
How do these articles speak to the quote above, i.e. how do these articles support Brandt’s theory of sponsors of literacy?
This paper should be 3-4 pages long and should include lots of quotes from the articles themselves. You do NOT have to create a Works Cited page for this assignment.
