Energy and transportation are necessities for modern living. The idea of transportation has evolved over the past several hundred years through innovation and opportunities. The evolution of transportation has expedited travel for people along with making the delivery of products and services much more efficient. Although transportation has improved over time, it comes at a cost through the usage of energy. The topics for this weeks’ discussion relate to the current situation with energy in relation to transportation along with finding ways to mitigate pollution and conserve the energy that is being used.
Current Situation With Transportation And Energy
All forms of transportation produce some sort of pollution that contributes to the effects of climate change. There are many factors to reasons why this is becoming a growing problem. A growing population leads to more highway congestion, which leads to roads, bridges, ports, and waterways needing to be improved and upgraded (Transportation Research Board, 2019). These problems lead to more energy needing to be used to get the required tasks done on top of the pollution already being generated by the increased usage of transportation. The types of pollution created from energy sources depict the reason why this is a growing concern that needs to be addressed.
As time goes on, pollution is increasingly becoming more of a concern. Some mobile source air toxics that are generated by transportation are benzene, formaldehyde, and diesel particulate matter (EPA, 2020). These sources of pollution do harm to the environment and health, as they contribute to creating different types of cancers. Reducing smog, soot, and other toxic pollutants by 2030 can potentially prevent 40,000 premature deaths, 34,000 avoided hospitalizations, and 4.8 million workdays lost annually (EPA, 2020). Below are discussion questions to help classmates generate ideas and gain perspective from one another on how to find solutions to the challenges that the planet currently faces.
1. What are ways to mitigate the impact of emissions that we create from all forms of transportation? This is an open minded question, as perspective and/or academic sources can be used?
2. How can renewable energy be used in transportation
3. What is the environmental impact of renewable energy?
4. What is the effect of transportation on the economy?
5. What is Fracking
