Professor instructions:
Response 1. – Guidelines
Your first short response is to focus on the Romantic poetry we have been reading. You may choose from any of the assigned poems, and write about 1 page (2 full paragraphs should suffice), and try to address a question that the poem prompts.
Here are two examples I mentioned in class:
1. Keats ends “Ode to a Nightingale” with two rhetorical questions (e.g., he doesn’t provide a direct answer). Based on your reading of the whole poem, how would you answer the question(s)? Support your ideas with reference to specific passages.
2. Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey” is a long meditation on the nature of the self, memory, and consciousness—and how those are tied to the experience of the natural world. You might begin by asking something like: How can we make sense of or learn from Wordsworth’s view of self and nature in our world today (or in your own life)?
*Feel free to experiment a little, even if it means your answers aren’t necessarily perfect. I will tell you whether or not your interpretation makes sense.
My instructions:
I will include which poems we went over in class over here….
I have to submit my paper at 5 pm which means I beg that it is not a minute over 3 hours. It will be 4 pm in 3 hours and I still need to look over it before submitting it.
Here are the poems and you choose what you want to write:
Keats ends “Ode to a Nightingale”
Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey”
Coleridge, “Kubla Khan”;
Byron, “The Girl of Cadiz”;
Keats, “La Belle Dame sans Merci”
Shelley: “Ozymandias”;
Keats: “Ode on a Grecian Urn”
