Overall Project: Select one of the projects listed below. You will base your project on the themes, concepts, civilizations, artistic periods, artistic styles, or artists we have been studying this semester. Your project must reflect an understanding of one or more of the sections of the Art History Critique process: Formal Analysis, Interpretation, and Historical and Cultural Context.
Process: You may want to consult sources beyond the textbook as you complete your project. Keep track of these sources, because you must identify them in MLA style format or Chicago Style format (the gold standard for Art History). I will post links to style guides for both styles. Deliverables: Submit the completed project in Canvas at the submission link in the Projects Module. The final product can be submitted as a Word doc, a Pdf file, Image files, a PowerPoint presentation, depending on what best suits your project. Some projects may call for several different type of submission formats.
Project Choice 1: Design a Busch-Gardens-style amusement park based on a theme, concept, civilization, artistic period, artistic style, or artist you have encountered in this class. Your park must include at least five (5) attractions, such as rides, shows, or entertaining displays. At least three (3) of the attractions must be rides. Your attractions should reflect an understanding of at least one aspect of the Art History Critique process.
Deliverables:
1) An introductory paragraph explaining the overall concept for your amusement park. This paragraph should address how this concept reflects the material you have learned in this class. 2) A detailed description and/or detailed drawing of each of the 5 attractions. If you decide to use only a drawing, make sure that the drawing has clear labels explaining the attraction.
3) A paragraph for each attraction explaining how it fits your overall concept and how it reflects your understanding of at least one aspect of the Art History Critique process. 4) Identify any sources you used to develop your amusement park, including the textbook. Project Choice 2: Plan/design a work of art in any medium that “has a conversation” with a theme, concept, civilization, artistic period, artistic style, or artist you have encountered in this class. By conversation, I mean that you have considered your relationship as an artist with the art of the past, which is your artistic legacy. This relationship can take many forms: rejecting the art of the past, building upon it, challenging it, absorbing it, etc. Your conversation should incorporate your understanding of at least one aspect of the Art History Critique process.
Deliverables:
1) A plan or preliminary design for your work of art or a picture of a work of art completed for this project. I do not expect you to make a completed work of art for this project.
2) An artist’s statement of at least 5 paragraphs explaining how your conversation with the material in this course and the Art History Critique process is reflected in the work of art you have planned or made. 3) Identify any sources you used to plan your work of art, including the textbook. Project Choice 3: Design a board game based on a concept, civilization, artistic period, artistic style, or artist you have encountered in this class. The purpose of the game is to teach the players something about art history. Deliverables:
1) The Theme: Provide an introductory paragraph explaining the concepts and information you want to convey to the players. All of the components of the game should be designed with this theme in mind. This paragraph should address how this game reflects the material you have learned in this class and your understanding of the Art History Critique process. 2) Provide a basic overview of the game including: a. What are the objectives of the game play? b. What does the game board look like and what does it do (include a sketch of the game board)? The design of the game board should communicate the theme.
c. What actions can the players make? In other words, how is the game played?
d. What does the game board look like and what does it do (include a sketch of the game board)? The design of the game board should communicate the theme.
3) Explain how information about art history is going to be conveyed to the players during the game. Provide at least 3 specific examples of specific vehicles for information. For example, if information is conveyed squares on the board, explain the information that would be on 3 of those squares. 4) Identify any sources you used to develop your game, including the textbook. Project Choice 4: Design a small museum exhibition based on a theme, concept, civilization, artistic period, artistic style, or artist you have encountered in this class. Your exhibition must contain at least five (5) works of art that are currently in the collection of a brick-and-mortar museum (not a web museum). The works can be any size (even if they are too large to actually use in a real exhibition) and must include works from at least two different museums. Your choice of theme and works of art should reflect an understanding at least one aspect of the Art History Critique process. Deliverables:
1) An introductory paragraph explaining the overall theme of your exhibition. This paragraph should address how this concept reflects the material you have learned in this class. 2) An image of each work of art. In lieu of including an image, you can include a URL that links to an image of the work of art. 3) Each image should be followed by a “wall label” for the object that identifies the artist (if known), title, date, size, medium, and name of museum that owns it. This wall label needs to also include a paragraph for each work of art explaining how it fits your overall concept and how it reflects your understanding of at least one aspect of the Art History Critique process. The labels should be engaging so that the museum visitor would want to read them.
4) Identify any sources you used to develop your Museum Exhibition, including the textbook.
