Please respond to the following prompts. You are expected to write two essays for this exam.1. Toward the end of the 18th century, the male body, as an institutional, aesthetic, and political form, entered a period of crisis. Please describe, in detail, what this crisis looked like, what was lost to the male body and, in some cases, what was gained. Your response should focus on oneof the following paintings: Jacques-Louis David, Death ofMarat, 1793 Anne-Louis Girodet, Citizen Jean-Baptiste Belley, Ex-Representative of the Colonies, 1797Théodore Géricault, Raft of the Medusa, 1819Eugène Delacroix, Massacres atChios, 1824 You may introduce other pictures (e.g., David’s Oath of the Horatii or Oath of the Tennis Court, Géricault’s anatomical fragments, even Seurat’s Helmeted Warrior or Echo) or comparisons (e.g., Belley next to Marat). But if you do, keep it brief. Any additions or comparisons should be strategic. 2. How paintings get made matters as much as the content they picture. Arguably, the latter (content) cannot be understood apart from an understanding of the former (technique). This is especially the case with Claude Monet’s Red Boats, Argenteuil (1875) and Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte, 1884 (1886). The hows and the whats of these two paintings are entwined. The assignment: write a short comparative essay examining how Monet and Seurat painted their respective pictures. Think in granular terms; think on the level of the brushstroke. How does Monet apply paint to canvas? What does Monet’s way of handling paint tell us about his ambitions as an artist? What about Seurat’s handling and his ambitions? What vision of production does “the dot” realize? What’s similar about Monet’s and Seurat’s techniques and what’s different? What can we learn by comparing these two techniques? What do they tell us about Monet’s and Seurat’s attitudes toward modernity? What do they tell us about modern life and experience in general, about leisure and its consumption? THERE IS NO NEED FOR YOU TO SPEND MORE THAN ONE HOUR, TWENTY MINUTES COMPOSING YOUR TWO ESSAYS (40 MINS PER ESSAY). THIS IS AN EXAM, NOT A TERM PAPER OR THE LIKE. PLEASE LIMIT EACH RESPONSE TO 2-4 DOUBLE-SPACED PAGES.
