Our world has become a very visual one – we have art all around us. Understanding art is understanding our world! Art has been a part of our life for as long as humanity has existed. Art encompasses every part of human history. For many centuries, people have been creating, looking at, criticizing, and enjoying art. I would like to address a question: What is art?
What is Art? At this present time, the question “What is Art?” is not easily answered. The art historian Robert Rosenblum believed that “the idea of defining art is so remote [today]” that he doesn’t think “anyone would dare to do it.” What is Art? Many people argue over the answer to this question. There are several different interpretations as to what is considered to be a work of art. There are also many different types of artwork. Some believe that anything and everything in the world is art, while others believe that it takes talent, creativity, and a preconceived vision to produce true art.
While there is no single answer, and not everyone will agree on a definition, consider what you think of as “art” and then explain and support what makes it art. Begin to explore the many kinds of art we have all around us. Please think about the question seriously. You will need to develop a thesis statement and then support your thesis. The main objective of this academic paper is to give a definition and explanation of your essay’s topic: “What is Art?”
A definition essay is a special type of assignment that simply explains the meaning of a certain term. While some terms have specific and concrete definitions, such as tree or book, others are more abstract. For example, terms such as honor, freedom, love, and of course, art are all more abstract concepts that are a bit more difficult to explain. Breaking the term down into various aspects and analyzing those aspects is one method of structuring such an essay. Definition essays are a form of expository writing in which the writer provides information about the term to their audience. They typically follow a standard essay format and include both a definition and an analysis of the term.
Among the most important purposes of any study of the arts and humanities is to develop habits of mind, including critical thinking. By critical thinking, we do not mean “being critical” of something in the ordinary sense. Rather, we mean developing a capacity to analyze and synthesize, compare and contrast, understand causes and effects, understand, appreciate, and evaluate. Critical Thinking in this sense involves asking questions, making observations and connections, drawing inferences and provisional interpretive conclusions.
The question of the paper is intended to be a bit philosophical in the sense of discussing the abstraction of “art” as a general concept rather than being so specific about individual works or the many different forms of art (paintings, drawings, sculpture, architecture, etc.). I am not asking you to discuss the many forms of art. However, you may need to mention specific works of art or forms to illustrate what you are saying about art.
Remember: A definition essay is writing that explains what a term means. When writing a definition essay, remember to tell readers what term is being defined, to present a clear and basic definition, and to use facts, examples, or anecdotes that readers will understand. When writing a definition essay, the analysis goes deeper than a simple dictionary definition, it should attempt to explain why the term is defined as such. It could define the term directly, giving no information other than the explanation of the term. As to the proper way to express your opinion, it is very important to remember about the thesis statement’s use. The student should put one’s point of view in a clear and concise thesis statement, and develop this idea in one’s entire paper.
Every essay paper submitted must conform to the following standard requirements:
Typed, double-spaced, 12 font Times New Roman and have standard margins.
Length of essay; 500 word minimum; five (5) paragraphs:
Introductory paragraph (with underlined or bold thesis statement),
Three (3) Supportive paragraphs and
You should feel free to run over if you have something more to say.
Take a position. That position will ultimately be your thesis. You may have several ideas or thesis statements but choose one umbrella idea and create sub-topics.
Bold or Underline your thesis statement. The thesis statement identifies the term being defined and provides a brief, basic definition.
An essay paper should be well written. That is, it should be clear and well organized, with proper grammatical structure and correct spelling
While the ideas in this paper are intended to be yours, you should feel free to quote some other source if it really addresses your view of what is art.
If you quote any source, be sure to cite your sources within the essay and on a Works Cited page using a standard method of documentation (MLA, APA, or Chicago).

The Essay will be graded on whether content fulfills the goals of the assignment and on general writing skills (correct spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc.). The main objective of this academic paper type is to give a definition and explanation of your essay’s topic.
Work that meets the minimum requirements of an assignment is completed on time and displays average involvement with the course content is deserving of a “C.”
Higher grades are awarded to work that goes above and beyond the minimum standards to produce papers that reflect superior intellectual effort, excellence in critical analysis and overall creativity in the approach towards any given assignment. Translation: I do not hand out A’s. They are earned.
What is Art Essay will be graded during the week following the date that the assignment is due. Your essay will earn a point total out of 100 possible points. Each Objective/Criteria varies in points. In determining your grade, the following components are considered.
Introductory: 15 points
Thesis: 15 points
Content/Body: 25 points
Conclusion: 15 points
Writer’s Voice: 10 points
Organization and Format: 10 points
Editing and Conventions: 10 points
Overriding criterion: Originality and Authenticity.
If the essay is identified as not being original, and/or not done by the student, the instructor has the right to grade the paper as an F.
Submission of Assignment
Each assignment has a dropbox; please submit assignment using the appropriate dropbox under Assignments. Every assignment has a due date. Students are expected to submit assignments on or before the assigned due date. Due dates for each assignment are published on the course calendar. All writing assignments, except for discussions have a start date, due date and end date.
Start Date, Due Date, and End Date
The Start Date determines when the item becomes available to students.
The Due Date is the date and time when the assignment is due. All assignments have a due time of 11:59 pm, which means that the assignment is marked late at 11:59:01 pm. Student assignments submitted after the due date and time will be marked as late and will be reduced one letter grade reduction, a 10-point deduction. For work to be eligible for an “A” Grade, it must be submitted on time. It is recommended that students try to send in their assignments a few days ahead of time in case there are any technical problems. Work may be submitted late, but will drop a letter grade.
The End Date determines when the item is no longer available. The last day that the Dropbox is available to students. Late papers lose a letter grade. Students have two (2) days after due date to turn in late assignments. Work submitted after two days past the original due date will not be accepted and will receive a zero.

“To present the words or ideas of another as one’s own”. All writings assigned are to be the student’s own original work. The inclusions of someone else’s work to illustrate a point, regardless of length, must be indicated with the use of quotation marks and through the use of footnotes to indicate the source of quote. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the course. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an “F” in the course. If the student believes that he/she has been erroneously accused of academic misconduct, and if his/her final grade has been lowered as a result, the student may appeal the case through appropriate institutional procedures.
Your responses must reflect your own writing. Do not lift phrases or sentences from the readings. Do not simply re-order words in sentences from readings to include in your responses. It is appropriate to use a technical term or phrase directly from the paper. However, a good rule of thumb is not to use more than 5 words in order from the readings. Do not use direct quotes from the readings.
If you plagiarize, fail to include a bibliography or footnote citations when using any outside sources (including textbook), the essay will receive a zero for the assignment. If you plagiarize (i.e. cut and paste from an on-line site, etc.), you will fail the assignment and subject to disciplinary action through the regular procedures of the student’s home institution. Refer to the student handbook provided by your home institution to review the student conduct policy.
