**THIS IS FOR AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL CLASS** **MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE IN WRITING ABOUT ARCHAEOLOGY*** **DEADLINE IS SET** **USE THE LINKS BELOW** **THIS IS A 3 in 1 PROJECT SO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY** Instructions: this is a 3 page essay divided (i.e. separated with a label) up into sections based on the essay. TOPIC #1 is talking about topics in archaeology and how they reflect culture(s) of the world. TOPIC #2 is talking about how movies about archaeology misrepresent the field of archaeology. TOPIC#3 is talking about a specific archaeological site in the state of Georgia and how that site is prominent in the landscape and surrounding community.
1)Topics related to archaeology are often discussed in the media. For this extra credit assignment, you should visit any reputable news site (conspiracy theory websites are not reputable) and read a news article published during this semester that explores any facet of archaeology that we have covered in class (that includes a lot). Next, type up a brief summary of the article (including a link to the original news article) and discuss the significance of the article’s main point to archaeology and the culture(s) of the world. This is intentionally very open-ended, to allow you to use your creativity and critical thinking skills together. All typed essays must be composed using double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font. Essays are limited to one (1) page in length. The link below talks about state level societies and how large populations and population densities were integral part of creating a centralized government. This compares to what we learned in class that populations shifted from an egalitarian to hierarchical society and that a characteristic of a state level society is a mobilization (i.e. expansion) of a population that you can effectively manage in order for taxation, tributes, and corvee labor. https://phys.org/news/2020-11-explore-population-size-density-centralized.html
2)Archaeology is often misrepresented in the media. Choose any movie or tv show that includes archaeology and watch it, then compose a short essay presenting the name of the movie or show you watched and how archaeology was misrepresented. All typed essays must be composed using double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font. Essays are limited to one (1) page in length Use the movie “The Mummy” as the film that misrepresents archaeology. Use the link below and the paragraph that starts with “Myth: Archaeologists basically collect stuff for museums” to get an idea but not as a source. https://www.businessinsider.com/what-hollywood-gets-right-and-wrong-about-archaeology-2017-3#myth-archaeologists-basically-collect-stuff-for-museums-2
3) Consider archaeological sites. Have you been to an archaeological site? If you have been to several, list which site is your favorite and why. How prominent is that site to the surrounding landscape and community? Basically, what does that site mean to the community it is situated in? All typed essays must be composed using double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font. Essays are limited to one (1) page in length. Use the Etowah Indian Mounds for this paper. They are located in Cartersville, Georgia which is located in Bartow County in Northwest Georgia.
